The state of you-don't-want-to-live-here adds lots of taxes to everything. A $20 theatre ticket includes a 15% amusement tax, a 5% city tax, and a 5% state tax. If there were no taxes how much would the ticket cost? Hope it amuses you! |

Nope not 15, Lil 'bit... That would make the total tisket cost 18.75$ If you don't believe me, check it out: 15*1.25 And you really shouldn't complain. The bf and I just went to see a movie. 12$ with a student discount, 15$ without it! Insane I tell you. Insane! |

This is going to depend on how the taxes are applied - ie if one or more taxes are payable on the amount including the other taxes... Example: in Ontario - GST and PST are both applied on the base purchase price of say a bicyle, or most non-food things, but for liquor, most of the taxes on liquor(over 100%)are applied to a base price and paid by the importer, manufacturer and seller to the governments and then passed through to the retail price on which you then get to pay GST and PST - in effect paying sales taxes on taxes. So in the above question if the taxes are all applied on the base ticket price of 16 dollars you end up paying 20 bucks, as Bethie says. But if say, the city and state taxes are on the amusement tax as well but not on each other then a 16 dollar ticket would cost (16*1.15)*(1+.05+.05)= 20.24 which is $.24 tax on taxes. If all taxes are "cumulative" then a ticket with a base price of $15.77 would end up just under $20. Now of course you had to earn this money and you paid income tax last year at an incremental tax rate of 41% so you had to earn 33.89 to buy this $16.00 ticket. Now you also have kids, so even though Mom babysat you had to spring for pizza ($25.87), and the car needed gas to get there ($47.50), and what's a movie without popcorn ($7.74)? By the time you earn the money and pay income tax we are up to $171.32 of earning to afford this night out. But wait, if we had saved the $101.11 and put it against the mortgage @ 5.4% for 25 years we would have reduced our total payments $375.61 And of course that's $619.84 of future earnings with the government's share. Is it any wonder some of us are broke?? Thank God we are all spankos and can amuse ourselves at home..... Depressingly, Peter Grimm |

Dear lord!!! Yes, 16 was the answer I was looking for, based on non-compound taxes which, really, are just evil. I hate being taxed on tax. It's just so wrong. And Peter... you may need to let your wife handle the budget for a while. I fear you are obsessing.... |

Peter, you are thorough, I have to admit that! I've been known to do that sort of figuring myself. That is until Dan gives me the stink eye! Whew! That's a lot of figuring! But you're right, being able to amuse ourselves at home is a very good thing! |
