Two issues: 1. I get double e-mails for every posting. Is there a setting I've screwed up? 2. I clicked on a smiley and it tripped my anti-virus software with a sober-q. I vaulted and delated it but I thought you should know ASAP Best |

Hi Headteddy! I checked and it looks like what's happening is that you've selected to receive emails about certain topics and selected to receive additional email for replies to your posts. It's possible that if you've posted a comment, you'll receive an email as part of the first option as well as the second. I think that's whats going on anyway. As for the second problem, which smilie? I'd have to check it to know what's going on. Thanks for the heads up Headteddy! |

Headteddy, I hunted down 357.gif and checked it carefully, there's no virus associated with it that my software can find. Since .gif files aren't one of the filetypes that can hide executable code, and since all smilies and uploaded text are hosted on our server, I honestly don't see how your error message got triggered. My best guess is that your virus checker software is set to alert for any downloaded file, rather than simply any executable file. But that doesn't explain why you got a specific virus alert. Perhaps sober-q sometimes hides itself in a file misnamed 357.gif (or 357.gif.exe, as the virus writers sometimes use multiple extensions to confuse things) and your virus checker alerts on the filename without checking its contents. Anyway, I can reassure you that that file on this server is in fact benign. |

Thats strange. I have been told that gif files CAN carry a virus. The coding in the file itself is easily hidden. It's the same with a word file. The only real safe file is a plain .TXT file. |

It's the server we're using. It hasn't reacted well to the addition of the Den. We're waiting on an upgrade but it's taking them a little longer than anticipated to get the new hardware in. They're supposed to have it in soon and our problems should be solved. Sorry about the problems. Some people seem to have more problems than others and I don't know why. And there are times during the day when it's worse than others, too. I know it's a pain so thanks for your patience. |
