when I was over in the UK for the summer, I was quite shocked to hear people talking and using foul language in most of their phrases. Now I'm far from being a saint (there's no need to smile about that), I used swear words too, but only when I'm annoyed or in the throes of some sexual exploit  . Now what I was hearing, was swear words being used as if its punctuation , or adjectives. I think thats sad.

It's not just the UK, Me...I hear a lot of it right here in the good old US of A. Sad ha? I don't have the "cleanest" of mouths either, but Hubby is sure to warm my bottom if my language get out of control

Its not the problem of people using these words that shocks me, everybody does now and then.Its the fact that there are more foul words in the phrases than normal ordinary found in the dictionary words. As for you getting a warmed bottom for using words like that, I'd like to congratulate your hubby on his moral standards

I'll tell you one of the saddest things I ever saw/heard. I was in a market one day and saw a young man walking with his son who must have been about 3/4 years old. The man was saying to the boy, 'Go on, call him a cunt!' referring to someone else. Now apart from the fact that I personally find the use of that word to be totally offensive in that context, I couldn't believe that the dad was encouraging him to say it. It's bad enough that kids pick up these things by themselves without the parents condoning the use of them.

I hate going to the mall because of this very subject. Im walking around and here comes a couple of kids chatting away LOUDLY and swearing every other word. They walk by elderly ladies and mothers with small children, totally oblivious that everyone can hear their foul mouths. It disgusts me.
On the other hand...when I was down in Georgia the last month, Ann and Mr. B took me to an Atlanta Braves game. Afterwards we had a long wait for the shuttlebus to get back to our car. We were surrounded by college age kids, most of who had been drinking beer during the game. During that whole wait and then the ride to the car, I never heard one swear word...not one! Was that because I was in the south? The bible belt? Im not sure, but I was thrilled to not be subjected to foul language that evening.
I get spanked as well for swearing...at least I do if Steve catches me at it.

I'm not sure if the bible has anything to do with this southern respect for language, but the belt probably has.

I don't know about Wolfie, but if I start to swear during a spanking you can be sure more swats are added (and harder too!)....
Me, as much as I said...."eeewwwww!!" when I saw the picture you added above (the man's head being cut off- yuck yuck) I can totally agree because of what Gypsygirl said regarding that father and his little boy.....what a shame....some parents are so ignorant.

I just felt so sad for the boy, because he wasn't going to have a chance with a father like that. My son comes home from school repeating things that the bigger boys say in the playground and it's a continuous uphill battle to instill in him the sense of what's acceptable and what is not. At the moment he is still shocked when he hears a swear word (and I do swear myself on occasion when in a temper) and I know that he will at some stage start using them but I don't want him to think that it's OK to ask me 'Mum, what's for fucking dinner?'

Most swearwords are horrible but that is probably one of the most baser ones but unfortunately that is the one that is most used.
My personal favourite is Bollocks when I'm in a snit. Such a lovely sound to it.
I cannot abide c**t, and I only wrote it out in full earlier on to get the point across.

Shylah, you would be a good normal frenchie. We are saying "merde" all the time and its in the dico. Bu to tell the truth, everybody swears at some time , but why do some people use thode words every other word they spit out. I'm sounding like a fuddy dudder now

I don't know if that is directed towards ME or me (that sounds weird) but just in case, I'm not any sort of goody-two-shoes, I do swear, when I'm in a temper or really frustrated I swear like a trooper and kick things as well. I just can't see the appeal in a conversation that goes something like "I was fucking walking down the fucking street and I fucking tripped over a fucking stone and I fucking ripped my new fucking jeans". I've heard things like that.

Gypsy, I can't write words like that let alone say them. thats one of the words that I just dont use even when I'm angry. as for the word that all you ladies dislike , I believe that i have never used it once in my whole life. I'm not a goody goody. I get pissed off with things , but mostly with people. I think that the only word I use is "Merde!!" (shit) but i'm not proud of that either. My daughter used swear words in her ordinary language. she used it a lot. I did'nt want to use any other method than to make her think a little more of what she was saying. She said things (in french but I'll translate for you)like "It makes me want a shit" and I'd just pop in behind her phrase and calmly say , "its getting on my nerves" at first she would look at me the way teenagers look at their parents when we are effectivly "getting on their nerves".but she would repeat her phrase my way. This went on for three or four months. She is now a young lady who still swears when she's upset or angry, but in normal conversation , she is very choosy about her vocabulary. I for one am proud of her

Well, I actually had to teach my mom how to cuss effectively. She was telling someone off once and afterwards, I told her I needed to teach her how to swear! Took awhile but she got the hang of the "f" word. Now when she tells someone off, she says it's more fun.
I know, I know...but it had to be done. She just wasn't getting it right!

I don't swear very much, and have been especially careful since my daughter was born (she's 2). About the only times I do cuss are when I'm driving alone (you have seen L.A. freeways, haven't you) and when I'm incredibly stressed/frustrated, and then rarely in public. In fact, when I occasionally do cuss in front of people I know, they always look shocked...I have something of a reputation as a straight arrow. If they only knew.

I don't swear anymore. I learned my first swear words from my parents and used them occassionally, but then I started working in the schools. I can't just turn it on and off, so I stopped it completely. Which is kind of funny, considering how many swear words I hear from the children in the halls and during dismissal. Usually they know better than to swear in class. Most of them speak that way at home or in their neighborhoods, so I just ask them, "That isn't really a 'school' word, is it?" Which usually gets the point across. Of course they aren't usually intending to hurt anyone, they just aren't thinking. I just want them to be prepared for whatever work environment they end up in so they don't get fired....

I suppose swearing is the norm with lots of people. I know my hubby can't go 5 minutes without saying a swear word of one kind or another. He seems to lose his temper more quickly the older he gets.
sighhhhh....the world just isn't as perfect as he is.
You should be riding with him when he is driving! I've actually made him pull over and I drove just to calm him down!
To the original post....
I was in a grocery store yesterday and heard a couple discussing what kind of meat to get for their dinner. He didn't seem to be able to say one sentence without saying the "f" word and she didn't seem to take any notice of it.
It seems to me that using the "f" word is very commonplace these days. I tend to flinch when I hear it. I guess that's because I'm from the "old school" where "damn" and those kind of less harmless swear words were sort of acceptable. I just don't feel comfortable with the "f" word.

I'm with you Shylah...the "c" word is one I hate.
I have a small child again...so I have to be more careful about what I say. She is 1 and is now a parrot.
My husband doesn't mind when I use some bad words but the "f" word is a no no. I'm with you again Shylah it shouldn't be as accepted as it is. |
