Yesterday I seen a massage therapist, for the second time, for both arms going numb and hurting and for tennis elbow. My job requires that I do a lot of lifting which is keeping the tendonitis from healing. She had to tell me several times during the session to relax and let go.
Does anyone know of any relaxtion tips for a woman living in a hetic and noisy household full of family members and two dogs?
I try to sneak outside and socialize with my animals but 2 minutes out the door and someone is needing me to go somewhere, do something for them.
I love my family I just need to learn how to relax and not take life so seriously.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Cheeky...sounds like you need some serious "alone" time just for you :-) Is there a way you can drive somewhere - a park perhaps to just walk, or sit? Maybe it would help to sit the family down and tell them that Mom NEEDS one hour just to herself - no interruptions! Tell them that it is a MEDICAL necessity! :-))
Best of luck girl....I am here for ya~~

Cheeky I wish I had some advice for you, but I just don't know what to tell you. Pink is right you need some alone time. Life is stressful...walking helps me de-stress...finding the time for the walk presents its own challenges I know. Hang in there!!

tammynx,
Thanks. I am thinking of buying some earplugs or learning to be like my dad and have selective hearing.
My dad swore he was hard of hearing but if you walked away from him and whispered something like " what bit him in the ass?". I guarntee he would hear it.

Cheeky--

That was funny! Selective hearing may be an inherited trait for us men...but it can be learned!

Have you tried yoga or any of the tantric (non sexual) indian and asian disciplines? Beyond limbering the body (which is a relaxation technique in itself), they teach breathing and centering of the body and mind. In the objective Western world, we often dismiss this as nonsense. 5000 years of Asian experience tells us differently.

Double Trouble,
Tried Yoga once but my dog thought it was play time and everytime I started to get in a position here he came and started licking my face and nudging me. Tried locking him out of the room too, but he constantly scratched at the door. So I gave up.

I'll have to try the indian and asian diciplines. Anything beats being tensed up all the time.

I used to work a high stress job that kept me on call 24/7 because even when I wasn't in the office, I was supposed to be available for consultations. That made me seriously crazy but I loved the challenge and the job so I did what I could to cope.

Because of limited time, I learned some techniques that I still use today when I need them. I used deep breathing excercises along with relaxation imagery and sound therapy . These are things you can work into your life that take just a few minutes and you don't have to buy a lot of equipment or have training to do.

For the deep breathing excercise, find a place where you can be quiet and rest comfortably. I used to do this right after waking, while preparing to sleep, or even at my office desk. First, close your eyes then start relaxing your muscles starting at your feet. Slowly work up your body, relaxing each set of muscles and letting them go limp. Now focus your attention on your breathing. Take deep breaths and slowly let your breathe out. Count your breaths, and say the number of the breath as you let it out, to help you relax your mind by distracting it from your day and focusing it on your counting.

Once you're completely relaxed stop counting and let your mind wander to a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable scene or image in your mind. Let your senses bring the scene to life in your mind. Focus on how it must smell, sound, look, and feel. It's like a short vacation in your mind. Once you get used to doing this, sometimes all you need to do when you're feeling stressed is think of that place, even for just a moment, and it helps relax you. The whole process doesn't take but a few moments and once you've been doing it for awhile, it's easy to slip right into it.

For sound therapy, I found music that calmed me and induced relaxation for me. I started with soft classical, surf sounds, nature sounds, and then eventually moved on to some very relaxing contemporary Christian music. I selected a group of songs that helped me get away from it all and let my troubled mind rest. Sometimes I'd put on my headphones, sit outside at night, and just kick back. Sometimes I'd do it to help me fall asleep. Even now, all I have to do is hear one of those songs and I feel refreshed.

I know it's tough when you're being pulled in a hundred different directions and you think you're never going to get a moment to yourself, but you need to grab at least a few moments just for you or you won't be any good to anyone else.

(From a guy's perspective) Bethie has a good tip in the music. I like the CDs that just have rainfall or nature sounds. And the massage therapist is tops -- ahhh -- the best I mean. I go about once a month and it's the best $55 I ever spent. My wife, who is a teacher, has started going as well.

Double Trouble,
Researching info for Indian Asian Discipliines. Have any suggestions?
Thanks, looking up info now on the Indian Asian Disciplines.
Thanks Bethie, I'm going to try the breathing exercises and CD's of nature's sounds. That is what the therapist has playing while she is massaging.
Bluepencil,
The massage therapist is the very best. I too am going once a month. She wants me to have weekly treatments, but right now I can't afford it. I have a pup that had some medical problems and right now we are having to take him to the vet every few weeks. To make sure all the problem was solved with antibotics and he is on the road to recovery.
Though my visits to the therapist is cheaper than Snicker's vets visits. LOL For a 30 minute session the therapist only charges $30.00

What I do personally is put on a cd, just any artist that I really enjoy, light some candles, and take a really long, hot shower. It's very relaxing and that "clean" feeling keeps me relaxed afterwards.

I had to put these techniques to use over the weekend. I was on my way home and one of the flights I was on was very long and uncomfortable. It's a good thing I had my ipod loaded with some relaxing tunes.

At one point I was telling myself, breathe deeply, listen to the calming music, find your happy place, close your eyes, maybe the obnoxious passenger beside you will get the hint.

I like to meditate.

I also have some favorite CD's I listen to. Relaxing music and I downloaded all my favorite songs on my MP3 so when I get stressed or just in the mood to listen to them, I lie down and close my eyes and just listen.

I like to listen to Native Radio on the net. It's a great site with Native American music both powwow or contemporary.

}I think it might be a few days before I get to relax. I have a CD that has natures sounds on it and I want to try it out, but i'm gonna wait a day or two til we begin to get over our loss.

my hubby and I have had a very stressful day.Today We lost our beloved puppy Snickerdoodles.

He was 1 1/2 years old. On Mother's Day he almost died, his bloodcount on that day was 4%, but I found a vet that would come in the office on Sunday and check him out. He had to have a bloodtransfusion. Stayed 4 days in the clinic. Came home on antibotics and fluid pills. All was looking well. We had to take him back yesterday for checkup on his bloodwork to make sure his bloodcount was in range and that his whiteblood cell count was in range. Bloodcount was down to 29% suppose to be 35%, WhiteBlood Cells were 20,000 and they were suppose to be 17,000.
Went to the vets, done bloodwork, and xrays cause Snickers was breathing really funny. Vet checked xrays and found a spot on the lungs and a spot on the liver. Our only option to give him any help of getting over whatever was infecting him was to do surgery to check his liver and lung.
The spot on the lungs was fluid build up. The spot on the liver was actually the gallbladder. The liver had shrunk so much til the gallbladder was bigger and showed up on the xray as a growth/spot.
We just got through burying our puppy.
In 16 years of marriage I have only seen my husband this devastated once, when his dad passed away.
We were both very close to our lil baby. We have no children (by choice and circumstances surrounding us) so our two dogs are our babies.
It will be next week before we get the results of the biopcies on the liver.
Snickers done fine last night through a new blood transfusion, and done fine today through the surgery. When they went to put him in his cage his heart stopped. They attempted to bring him back around but he wouldn't.

We got to see him yesterday evening before they took him back to prepare him for today. The assistant brought him in the room to us and he jumped and loved all over me and hubby licking us in the face.
If you ask me, I think he knew he wasn't gonna make it and was giving us one last big display of love.
He trotted happily behind the assistant back to the cage area as we left the clinic, everyone at the clinic loved him cause of his easy going personality.

We knew there was a chance of losing him, we just hoped for the best. The vet said if he had made it to live he probably wouldn't have lived for more than 1 or 2 months at the most and then we would have had to watch him constantly go downhill again.
We went to pick Snickers up at the vet and the vet explained all that had happened and said it was a learning experience from him cause what was wrong we don't really know. The two things the vet thinks it is, one shouldn't have effected the whitebloodcell count and the other shouldn't have effected the redblood cell count. His liver just couldn't produce enough protein- that is why the vet gave him the second blood transfusion last night. So Snickers would have a better chance of making it through the operation.
The vet didn't charge anything for all that he done for him yesterday evening and the surgery today.
All I can do is tell myself we tried to get him help and done the best we could.
*going to lay down and have a good cry, though I don't see how there can be any more tears left since I have been crying all afternoon.*

I had a similar problem with my left arm going numb. I thought it was because I was on the computer too long (working not playing) lol... It moved to mild pain in my neck. An x ray showed the 6 & 7th vertabrae had lost most of its.. hmm??? jell or something. the cushiony stuff.. They sent me to a physical therapist who put me in traction and stretched my neck! Sounds painful but it was actually so relaxing I would actually fall asleep during the traction. They also gave me a nice massage. Its been 6 months and so far no more numbness in my arm ...
A woman`s heart may be filled with an ocean of secrets but mine have all been released and I have a sore bottom to prove it!

Oh Cheeky...BIG HUGS for you.

I'm so sorry. I know how you feel, my dog is my baby. It's heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet. I had a little dog a few years back that was 16 years old when he died. It was very hard. They become part of the family.

You are in my thoughts.

LadyGator,
I havent' had xrays yet. But for the past two years I have been seeing a chiropractor for the numbness in my wrists. The next time I do to him I will mention what you wrote about and see if he will xray me. I sure do wish something would help. the massage therapist is doing pretty good, but each night I still have to take medicine to sleep through the whole night without my arms going numb. No matter which way I lay some part of my arms or hands goes numbs.

Thanks Shylah and Pinky. I appreciate it. I know it isn't as bad as losing a person. But it is almost as bad.

I have two suggestions I would like to share with you. As has been mentioned already, meditation I find to be one of the best stress reducers in the world, though you have to find ones that are right for you. There is lots of info on the internet, some excellent, some not so good, so try them and see which are easier for you to do, and which benefit you the most. Some meditations can get pretty complex, and if they become more work than pleasure, most people tend to stop altogether, so find ones that are right for you. There are also many benefits beyond mere relaxation when done regularly, such as better physical health, a stronger immune system, pain relief, and to me the greatest benefit is getting to know yourself on a level that you could never imagine. Once we learn to calm the winds of thought, we can much more clearly see a reflection of our inner self. Its much like a pond, when it is windy, the ripples in the waves prevent us from seeing ourselves clearly when we look down at the water, but when the winds calm, we see nearly a perfect reflection of ourselves. Even 10 minutes a day can have very positive effects in our lives; after a while you will find that the calming effects last through out your day, you become much more resilient to stress, and gain a new level of patience and self control.

Music is also great for relaxation. While most instrumental music will have a calming effect, there is music specifically designed for this purpose. Normally it will fall under the category of New Age, but they do call it many things. Some even have background tones that are blended into the music itself and these tones have been designed to actually alter brainwave activity, producing a more relaxed state of both body and mind, and imparting many of the same benefits as meditation. I listen all day at my office and it really does work. Many of the tapes and CD are actually produced by psychiatrists who have done research in this area and have refined them over the years. Again, an internet search will help you find them.

My final suggestion; get out into nature as much as possible. It has a calming effect and can renew one’s mind and spirit. Personally, I meditate very early in the morning on our beach and find that it gives me an awesome start to my day.

Hope some of this helps!

I am a very tactile person and I find that touch helps soothe me (I guess that all ties in with the skin to skin contact for the opposite reason.) I love to have my husband rub my head, back or feet. It has become such a routine that he almost automatically does it whenever he is next to me.

GentleGuy,
Thank you very much for the info. I will be searching the internet for relaxation tips and CDs.
Fanny,
It is sorta the other way around with me and Grizz. LOL
Oh. I like being touched and as you say it can relax you so nicely. But Grizz likes for me to gently rub his upper back when we go to bed. I run my fingertips through his hair, down his neck and over the top of his shoulders and he will be out like a light.
I like my shoulders to be rubbed or his fingers running through my hair, but if I am trying to get to sleep, it annoys me.
Sometimes just us holding hands with each other helps relax me. I know he is there so I can forget some of my troubles.
Thank you all for the tips.
Maybe some of the tips will even help me get over the shock of losing my pup. took him to the vet, walking Monday afternoon and toted him out wrapped in a blanket and bag Tuesday evening. Just wasn't expecting to lose him so quickly.

I like deep breathing and I try to think about sleep and how wonderful and relaxing it is to be in that state and eventually this helps... btw, great advice from the others!
