The story is told that in the middle ages the females of a village in Staffordshire were getting up to all kinds of mischief. Farmer Tom woke up one morning to find all his pigs had red ribbons around their tails. Sir William the local Squire found that his outhouses had all been painted red The Reverent Makepiece on entering the Church found that red flowers had been planted in his graveyard. In fact anywhere that possibly could have been had been coloured red. There were a group of boys in the village who were always up to mischief but it was unlikely to be any of them. The local bailiff was asked to keep his eyes open to find out who had this obsession with red. He spoke to his wife and she asked him what red reminded him of, but of course he had no idea. If he had been at the village pump that day he would have found Mrs Tom, Sarah Makepiece and Lady Margaret in conference with his wife. At this point I should say that it was very unusual for Lady Margaret to be down at the Pump but she had learnt from one of her servant girls that the women of the village were planning revenge on their husbands. It seemed that Farmer Tom had had course to chastise his wife again for not collecting the Eggs, the Rev. Makepiece had cut a branch from the yew tree in the churchyard and used it across Sarah’s derriere because she had not put fresh flowers in the church, the bailiffs wife had felt her husband’s belt because one of the tenants had left a message that she had failed to pass on. They had been surprised to see Lady Margaret until she explained that her husband had used his cane across her bottom as she had forgotten to get the housekeeper to order the venison for a party at the Manor. The group of ladies had decided that if their husbands liked red so much (the colour .of their bottoms) they would oblige. The bailiff decided to keep watch unbeknown to his wife. The said ladies had planned one more prank and that night they gathered at the village sign. Lady Margaret was of course the only one who could write and so helped by the other three she stood on the stool and pained out the WHITE on the village sign and changed it to RED. The bailiff seeing them realised who the culprits were so reported back Sir William. Sir William sent him to collect Farmer Tom and the Rector to join them at the Manor to discuss what could be done. Having discussed the matter they decided that at the party the following day at the manor they would deal with their Errant wives. The day of the party arrived and Lady Margaret was in her place at the table next to the Reverent Makepiece. Mrs Makepiece was next to Sir William whilst the bailiff and the farmer and their respective wives were further down the table. After the meal had been eaten Sir William stood as if to propose a toast but instead he announced that certain parties here had decided that the village should be coloured Red and in keeping with their wishes their husbands had decided that their backsides should no longer be white or even pink but red. At that point he grabbed Lady Margaret, the rector, the farmer and the bailiff also grabbed their respective wives and taking them across their knees raised their skirts and applied numerous spanks with their hands until each of the ladies were the proud owner of a shinny red bottom. Sir William also ordered his wife to repaint the sign. However sad to say the pain in her backside somewhat distracted Lady Margaret and the village sign in Staffordshire was repainted at Whitmore. When the gentlemen examined her work they laughed and said well certain ladies bottoms around these parts are not White any more. |
