Here's a little something for Valentine's Day: Once, a young queen walked outside in the garden, one frosty morning, and dropped her ebony hairbrush next to a rose. Musing aloud at the sight before her, she wished that she herself might have: “skin as white as snow, hair as black as ebony, and cheeks as red as roses.” There was a fairey flying by just then: not Glynnis, she who might have granted the gift of Beauty, but Annis, the one with the naughty sense of humour, which often manifested itself as jests played on unwary humans. And so it was later that same winter’s day, when Annis, now dressed as a wise woman, called on the young queen, and showed her how by using drugs and distillations she might take the colour from her skin and put it into her cheeks. Annis of course did not stop there; as soon as the queen began primping in front of her mirror, the mischievous fairey went straight to the King, and must needs tell him how his wife was disporting herself even now. He of course went straight to her chamber and reminded her, in the best possible way, that he had forbidden such artifice. As the punishment continued, the young king looked lustfully upon the sight before him, and as he held her over his lap, he reflected that here indeed was skin as white as snow, an hairbrush as black as ebony, and cheeks as red as roses. Annis nudged her sister and giggled, happy that the young queen’s wish had been so completely fulfilled, and Glynnis smiled back, because the young King had been given the gift of creating such beauty. © Hardwood 2007 |
