Being fairly new on the scene and still finding my way around the various sites available on the 'net' I have often come across abbreviations that I just cannot fathom out - any chance of getting a "dictionary" of discipline terms going for the "newbies" - e.g. is top and bottom the same as dom and sub - if so why the different terms? Dont mean to sound dumb,(the above illustration may appear very simple) but believe me there are some abbreviations out there that are not that clear cut. |

Here's the simple breakdown. Top is the spanker, bottom is the spankee. That can be very different from dom/domme and sub. Dominance and submission (D/s) are the terms used for a relationship in which there is an exchange of power/control to one degree or another. These terms may describe participants involved in a scene or for a long-term and more formal relationship. These terms are similar so it's easy to get them confused. There's also brat and sam (smart aleck masochist) which are sort of self-explanatory. Then there are the Masters and slaves which are the people involved in serious power exchange. Here are a few abbreviations: DD - Domestic Discipline HOH - Head of Household SSC - Safe, Sane, and Consensual OTK - over the knee BDSM - Bondage & discipline, Dominance & submission (D/s), Sadism & Masochism (S&M) TPE - total power exchange There's lots more but for the most part, those are probably the ones you'll see here. I know I'm forgetting something but that's all I can think of right now. Since I hate chat speak I won't include those abbreviations. If you see something you aren't sure about, just ask, we'll be happy to explain. |

A friend just pointed this out to me; I gave the definition of top and bottom relating to spanking only. In a wider sense, a top is the giver whether it's a bondage scene, a spanking scene, or any other scene. The bottom is the receiver in those circumstances. I just wanted to throw that in. |
