I'm actually getting some time alone with my BF tonight (he lives quite a ways away and I have 3 roommates) and he suggested that we try some new things. The first thing I would say is to start out gentle and go up from there. These areas are quite sensitive, and too much too soon can be a turn-off. However, once you're into it, you will probably be able to take an astounding amount of punishment if its done right.
For either pussy whipping or between bum cheeks, consider making a short martinet with leather bootlace tails.
Say, a 1 foot long 1/2 inch dowel as a handle and enough 1 foot boot laces to go around the handle. Use a little contact glue to get started, then wrap tightly with fishline or nylon upholstery thread and tie tightly. The nylon is best, because it can be stretched before tying, so keeps the tails in place better. A drop of Super Glue on the know will keep it tight. That might seem a little long, so go ahead and shorten to suit. Our preference is for the lashes to be a little longer than the handle, if any cutting is to be done.
Another way is to drill the end of the dowel and insert a screw eye and then run the laces through the eye. A rubber band around the laces next to the screw eye holds them in place. We use this as our travel toy, as, (disassembled) it arouses no curiosity when luggage is inspected. I prefer the action of the version with the lashes firmly attached, though.
You might end up with two or three of these, all different lengths. The ends of the lace can be cut on an angle to lessen damage.
Another possibility for the tails of a martinet is the vinyl lace craft shops sell for braiding projects. It has an exquisite sting in the sensitive areas mentioned.
When you have more time, look at Adam's Sensual Whips. We use a modified Mini Birch with great success. It is very accurate and allows a wide range of application force. If the tips are smoothed to a bullet shape, there is no possibility of unexpected damage. The stingers sold by Hanson Paddle work really well, too. We have both, as well as their short one with a longer handle, which put it in the middle of the two they offer, as far as range of impact.
Since you say you are going to try one are or the other, you might consider a strip of molefoam to protect your perineum, particularly if it is found to be a non-erotic area for whipping, as it is with some. The molefoam will also provide a clear delineation between the two areas, allowing the selected area to get full attention with no distractions. If he starts out gentle and ramps it up gradually, you will soon learn what is what.

update! I may have a new favorite thing! We ended up trying both but a last minute change in venue left us without our 'equipment' (I now owe my sister a few new kitchen utensils). We stuck mostly to wooden spoons and I had been wearing this narrow belt that came in handy.

Since you mention anal bruising, I should mention that it lessens with more experience. Frequent attention will keep it in shape. The anus can actually take more punishment than the surrounding skin can.
One other thing.......What was your position when your anus was being spanked? I don't know how prone you are to hemorrhoids, but we have found that the diaper position causes a higher likelihood of hemorrhoids. We do hard anal whipping with the subject kneeling, spread wide.

Actually tried a couple positions for the anal spanking. First we tried when I was bent over the bed on a couple of pillows, he'd been using his belt and so that was the position I was already in, that wasn't working because I had to reach behind me to spread my cheeks and it was uncomfortable for my upper body.
