Hi Ziggy, I have worked with parrots for years and have a peachface lovebird of my own. Ive handfed all manner of large parrots...but answering your question isnt easy. Birds bite for all manner of reasons, and the only way I could know for sure (I hope) would be to know more about your relationship with this macaw, and what exactly happened leading up to the bite. Was he perched on your hubby, and you went to pick him up? Birds can be very territorial and possesive of their favorite person. If you have children, have they been teasing him at all lately? This can make them grumpy, and prone to bite whoever just because they can. Were you handfeeding him when he bit? The problem with parrots is that they view the family unit as their flock, and in any flock there is a definite pecking order. And "you know who" always wants to be top bird, as it were. Things you can do to change his attitude some are...make sure the wings are freshly clipped, never allow the bird to perch higher than your shoulder, teach him commands like "step up" and "down" to reinforce whose the boss. More bites occur inside an open cage than anywhere else. Like I said, their territorial. Never attempt to feed him or clean the cage with him in it, move him to a ring stand or play area first. Be gentle, be firm and always remember who the boss is...NOT HIM! Good luck, and if theres anything more I can do, let me know. I want you to have a long and happy relationship with this bird...remember, they can live for up to 60 years! wolfie loves Steve more than anything else in the whole world...even more than chocolate and lobster! WHY ISN'T IT OCTOBER YET? *stamp*

Sorry to hear about having to have stitches. I hope you heal quickly. Just remember, most parrots aren't spankos. *grin* |

I think I must of startled him, at the moment he is on my shoulder, kissing me and talking a mile a min. he likes to pull my hair. the last time my hubbie had him on his shoulder and I walk into the room, he flew over to me and sat on shoulder. I also think that he is jealous of my cat and dog. I took care of his screaming, not know that they need about ten to 12 hrs sleep, thank you for your help. I love my ziggy, i use his name. LOL |

Parrots do tend to react first and ask questions later. Remember that they use their beak like an extra pair of hands, so when some people think they are being bitten, it is actually the bird losing their balance and grabbing for support. It sounds as though your Ziggy does care for you a lot if he gives kisses and plays with your hair. Hopefully this was a one time thing, although many parrots will bite off and on their whole lives for one reason or another.

yes I do love my ziggy, I try to learn more and more about them. I try to teach him new words. I take him out when the weather is good for him. I worry about him in the winter. In NH it gets really cold in Jan. I cover him with flannel sheets, I make him stand on my finger and if his feet are cold I turn up the heat. |

All parrots are tropical and love the heat, but they can take normal house temps under most circumstances. I keep mine in a seperate room that I can keep warm during the winter months (I'm in New England too), although covering the cage at night with flannel sheets is a good way to stop drafts as well. wolfie loves Steve more than anything else in the whole world...even more than chocolate and lobster!
