I am alergic to stings.
Yesterday I got stung by a wasp in the car. By the time my hubby got me to a dr, I was gasping for air and fighing to keep awake and not pass out. I'm fine now after spending a few hours in the hospital and receiving the medicines I needed but it got me to thinking....
How many of us out there have life threatening alergies and what do we do to protect ourselves? Now I have an Epipen in my purse. I have to carry it with me now like a new arm or leg. They said it is more important than my wallet to make sure I always have it with me. They are also sending me to a major alergy research clinic here to start me on a program to build up immunity to stings.
I am also DEATHLY alergic to penicillin. I have a card in my purse to warn of this. I used to wear a medic alert bracelet. I'm thinking now maybe I need to get another one and have it say that I can't have that and am alergic to stings. Because if I am out without my purse and something happens, no one would be able to know.
Something to think about.

I'm alergice to stings as well. I don't have an epipen anymore. I guess I had better get one.
If I were you Shylah I would for sure get a new braclet I think you can order it and have both alergy alerts on it.
Dont you just hate bee's and wasps??? |

Tammy, get another Epipen! It might save your life one day.
I've ordered a new medic alert bracelet over the web. Just type in medic alert bracelet in your search and it brings up all kinds of places to order one. They are not cheap...but then...is your life worth NOT having one?

Ants?? great a new threat...I never even thought about ants before.

Fortunately I have no allergies as yet and I feel for both of you.My wife has a few though.
And the ants,apparently no ordinary ones,they are flying ants that infect from house to house.
They have been drawn out by the hot weather.They travel from each house via under the floorboards.
So maybe some extra protection. |

Glad to hear you got the Epipen and medalert tag, Shylah. Anaphylaxis is definitely not something to fool around with. And the tags are a very good tool for helping us (EMS) to determine what's going on, particularly if the patient can't speak.
Most elementary schools out here have started keeping an Epipen on hand in case a student has an anaphylactic reaction...there's actually a specific law that allows them to do so.

OK...I had to buy a new purse cos my old one wasn't big enuf for the Epipen to fit.
Good excuse huh????

I need to get an alert bracelet for my diabetes, and now the coumadin Im taking. It never hurts to be safe.

Best to have one Wolfie....I carry a medical ID card in my wallet, Hubby bought me a medical braclet, (Coronary Artery Diease), and the girls at work bought me a medical necklace, so I had better have either the braclet or the necklace on before i go out or Hubby would be all over me.

Speaking as an EMT, the bracelets/necklaces are a better option than a card in your purse or wallet. We're trained to look for MedAlert tags as part of a head-to-toe assessment, so they will be found.
However, we try to avoid looking through wallets and such due to the liabilities involved (allegations of theft, etc.). If the patient directs us to, we will, and the police will look for an ID if the patient's unconscious with no family/friends around, but we generally don't.

Chris, that is exactly my point. Too many people take advantage of a situation and will sue the person that was trying to help them. By having a bracelet or a necklace that is easily found, you can give information to your condition, therefore giving them a chance to save your life, and protect them in the process.
