Before I opened my own businees I worked 12 years in the healthcare division of a large CPA firm. In accounting firms the normal procession is staff, senior staff, supervisor, manager principle than partner. However to be a partner you have to be a CPA. I started at the firm whan the company was working for exactly one year was sold so I started as a manager. I was promoted to the first non CPA principle that the firm has ever had in 90 years of business. This story is about the annual after tax season party where promotions are announced. I have posted several stories here and I would really like to know what you think not just wow great story. Do you like the way the charcters talk to themseleves what do you like or how does the story leave you - Comments like that help meto write better as well as allow the creative juice flow (and perhaps others as well {weg}) Thanks _Oh did I forget to say that this story has 3 chapters. ________________________________________________ The New Principle by Patricia Louise @2004 The company’s annual party was in full swing. People were dancing and just having fun when Mr. Adams, the managing partner got up to the microphone “Please everyone, please take your seats. Ok everyone take your seats. I am so pleased at all of you are here tonight. We had a wonderful year with a 22% increase in clients and billable hours increased by an impressive 38%. The major portion of that growth is due to the healthcare division which grew by an overwhelming 63%. Now on to what matters the most to you. Tonight all the hard work will be rewarded. Tonight we will meet the new managers and principles. These individuals were nominated for these positions by their current manager and/or the partners. The list of candidates was long and it was a hard decision to make, so many great candidates but tonight we have 10 new managers and 5 new principles. I would like to introduce the managers first. A hush came over the room, everyone knew that at this moment dreams and hopes hung on a thread. Becoming a manager insured that your future with the company was secured. The names of the new managers were read off. Two of them were from Maddy’s team. Each of them deserved the promotion and she happily gave their names as possible candidates. She was extremely glad that both of them got the position; it proves that the healthcare division was an important venture for the firm. Maddy sat on the edge of her sit, wondering if all the overtime, extra projects and dedication were going to pay off. Sure she knew that coming into a firm 8 years ago as a manger made it even harder to become a principle but she wanted it so very much. She just had to be the first non CPA principle. She thought that she was going to make it last year but no it wasn’t her time.., so this year she worked doubly hard, never saying no to a project, helping everyone and at the same time making sure that all project came in on or under budget, even bringing in a contract with a million dollar bonus if the project was completed on time. It was and the check arrived just yesterday. Shaken from her dream world to hear Shawn whisper “This is your year I just know it is.” as he squeezes her hand. ‘Yeah, yeah you said that last year to if I remember correctly. What are my changes there are 150 candidates; I have a snowballs chance in hell of it happening.” The 1st four names were read off. No surprises there, they all started their careers with the firm now it paid off. Each of them had paid their dues and now it was time to reap the benefits. Suddenly, as if everyone knew, a complete silence falls over the room- no one coughed or moved a muscle as if they were frozen in time. “The next new principle started at the firm 8 years ago, coming to us with experience that far exceeded expectation. This person is not a CPA but we wouldn’t hold it against her. It is with extreme pleasure and honor to announce our first non CPA principle; Maddy Sinclair. As if in a daze Maddy found herself on her feet. Her team hooting and hollering, giving her a stand ovation followed by them shouting “Maddy, Maddy.” Soon the whole room all 400 employees and spouse are shouting her name. In a daze she wills herself to move but is stop by Shawn who stands up “I knew you would do it” and plants a very passionate kiss on her lips. Embarrassed not only the intensity of the kiss but from the attention she moves to the front of the room. Along the way people are giving her high fives and hand shakes. Finally she makes it to the front of the room, Mr. Adams hands the key to her new office and her new name plate for the door. Madeline L. Sinclair, Principle. A lot of work went into getting here but it was so worth it. Maddy stood there speechless wondering “Now I know what it means to be winner. Who would have thought that the little girl with no parents, raised by her grandparents in another country, the person who took home all reports to have Shawn check her grammar and syntax would one day be a principle in a big accounting firm?” From his seat Shawn watched beaming with pride. Sure he was her husband and no matter what he always believed in her but Maddy really worked hard for this. He never doubted she could do it, and with his gently but firm hand guiding her she was always at the top of her game. Many times her butt paid the price but it’s all worth it now. Maddy didn’t know where the next hour went; it seemed to fly by so fast. People come out from no where to congratulate her. So caught up in the excitement she finally realizes that Shawn was left by himself. She makes her way back to the table “Oh Shawn I did it. I did it. I am the first non CPA principle and a female too. Thank you so much for your help. I know I couldn’t have done it without being married to you. I love you so very much.” Seeing the excitement and joy in her eyes Shawn just melted into her and kissed her. A kiss that reached into the depths of her soul, grabbing her very being, making the noise in the room disappeared; it was only the two of them caught in a love swept moment. Coming up for air they realize that everyone at the table is looking at them. Finally the partner in charge of her division stands up, “a toast to the first non CPA principle, Maddy I always knew you could do it.” Maddy turns to look at Shawn. She knows that he really doesn’t allow her to drink but occasionally and she already had one glass of wine, he nods his head every so slightly just enough for her to see, leaning towards her “enjoy this baby but this is your last glass of wine.” Taking a small sip, she smiles and thinks to herself “I a truly blessed. I have a husband who will always love me and now my dream job. Please God let this be true and not just a dream.” Suddenly Maddy feels her arm being grabbed. “Time for pictures and than I have someone you need to meet.” Turning around she calls to Shawn “Are you coming?” No baby go have fun but remember what I said.” The next two hours went by so fast that Maddy really didn’t have a chance to even think. The managing partner was taking her from table to table meeting all the people she didn’t know and just going on about how he always knew she was a winner. At each table a toast was offered. Caught up in the excitement Maddy didn’t realize that all the little sips were adding up to be more than she was normally allowed to drink. Finally feeling a little shaken, she tells the people at the table “Sorry no more wine for me.” Again they insist on a toast but instead of wine they offer very good Champagne. Not even thinking she reaches for a glass, “oh how smooth this is, I could really like this.” Out of no where she hears “tonight for you and only you, drink as much as you like, it’s not everyday that you make principle.” For the next several hours Maddy goes about having fun. After all this is the year end party and she worked very hard. Somewhere between all the partying and drinking she runs into Shawn. “Oh honey I haven’t be good to you. I am so sorry but it seems that everyone wants to talk with me.” “It’s ok little one. I know enough people here to keep myself busy; have fun but remember what I said. Principle or not I will still take you over my knee if you disobey me.” “Oh Shawn let’s dance, forget about everything and just have a great time. Let it go just for one night. Don’t be a stick in the mud.” “I’ll give you a stick in the mud” with that he grabs her arm, leading her to the dance floor, pulling her close to dance. Their bodies move together like a fine tuned piano making the moves seem fluid and easy. Those dance lessons sure did pay off. Shawn’s hands slide down to the small of Maddy’s back, creping slowly to her butt. The move is so natural but still lights a fire up Maddy’s spine. “Why are all theses years do you still excitement so” Wantonly she kisses Shawn, her tongue searching and her mouth opens when he responses. Passion is one thing that anyone around can see that they have, maybe a little more than they should at a company party. Leading her back to the table he whispers “Little one how many glasses of wine did you drink that made you kiss me like that” “I only had 2 glasses of wine like you said, but you didn’t ask me about the champagne.” “What Champagne?’ “The champagne that is at the bar just for me” Love can't always be seen or hear but will always be felt with your heart
